6 Ways In Which New Parents Can Deal With Second Night Syndrome

The first night of a newborn's life is usually uneventful; it is on the second night that the baby starts to cry and fuss.

What Is Second Night Syndrome?

It is important for new parents to first know about second night syndrome and then brace themselves for what lies ahead, after the birth of their child. Dr Shalini Verma, an obstetrician-gynecologist explains that the first night after birth is usually normal. The baby sleeps peacefully. It is on the second night that the baby starts to cry and fuss, and realise they are out of the womb. They are more awake and aware, and this is known as second night syndrome. A change of environment can disturb the baby, and parents must do a few things in order to make them comfortable once again. Scroll down to find out.

Skin-to-skin Contact

Parents must let go of blankets, and bring their baby close to them for a night cuddle. A parent's warmth and their heartbeat can recreate the comfort of the womb, and calm down a fussy baby, the doctor says.

Nursing

It is also important to embrace frequent nursing. The baby's 'comfort food', it can help establish milk supply, and create precious bonding moments between the mother and her infant.

Swaddling

Continue swaddling your baby as it can mimic the 'snug security' of the womb. It will calm them down and enable them to sleep peacefully, the doctor advises in an Instagram post.

Pajamas

Get comfortable by wearing soft pajamas or any other kind of comfortable clothing during skin-to-skin contact. It can comfort your baby as well by reminding them of your familiar scent. Wearing pajamas can also relax the mother, and she can calm her own baby down.

Dim Lights

Bright lights can be overwhelming for newborns, says the doctor, adding that parents can dim the lights of the room, or use a nightlight to mimic the cosy womb.

White Noise

You can play calming sounds like the rain to lull your baby to sleep.
